Citizenship Award Winner — Kylie Beattie

January 22nd, 2020

Kylie Beattie is a Grade 9 student at Pembina North Community School and was nominated for the Citizenship Award by teacher Carling Montgomery, who provided examples of how Kylie meets all the award criteria.

She begins by saying that Kylie does whatever she can to help and support those around her, from staff members to peers — whether it’s throwing in a load of laundry for her Foods teacher or helping a classmate with an assignment. Kylie’s kindness to others is evident, especially with her younger brother, as she makes sure to check on him during her breaks.

When Kylie misses school, she demonstrates responsibility by doing what needs to be done to catch up without prompting from her teachers. She is honest and owns up to her mistakes without making excuses. Mrs. Montgomery says that Kylie has big dreams and works diligently in all her classes in order to achieve her goals. She also shared how Kylie has been instrumental in the school’s Christmas play. From arranging costumes to doing hair and makeup, she is dependable and has everything very well organized.

Montogmery also says, “Kylie’s positive attitude gives her an incredible ability to see silver linings. She can always be counted on for a smile and a laugh.” Kylie has the courage to do what is right and will follow her heart. She does not get swayed by the negativity of those around her, and often encourages her peers to see the bright side of situations.

Although she is new to Pembina North Community School this year, Kylie has formed some wonderful friendships because of her listening skills. Not only does she listen to her peers, but she also provides positive support to them. Even when Kylie does not agree with the viewpoint of another student, she always displays respect for them and their opinion. Kylie also shows concern for others — if a student is struggling, she will do what she can to help them feel better, whether that is a listening ear, obtaining the help of a staff member, or simply a hug.

The school board is pleased to present Kylie with the Citizenship Award for recognition of the positive contributions she makes in her school and community. Congratulations!
