February 22nd, 2017

Neerlandia Public Christian School –

Fee to ride bus held at 2016-17 levels
The school board voted to keep bus fees at 2016-17 levels:

  • In-town Grade 1 to 12 students will pay $350 a year
  • Rural Grade 1 to 12 students, who don’t go to their designated school,
    will pay $450 a year

School board to consider charging for alternate site pick up/drop off service
Currently at least 223 students are picked up or dropped off at a different location than their regular bus stop on a consistent basis (i.e. the babysitters). There is no fee for this service. Later this spring, the school board will consider introducing a fee for this service.

Neerlandia Public Christian School priorities
Teaching for Transformation, Literacy and Numeracy
Principal Lisa Gehring reported on NPCS’ priorities. The school board learned how throughlines are incorporated throughout the subject areas, and watched literacy and numeracy in action. Throughlines are themes that are both ways of thinking and ways of being – they are used in the model of teaching called “Teaching for Transformation”, developed by teachers in Alberta Christian schools.

WHAT – students are writing on desks and rocking in chairs?
The school board also watched a Grade 9 math class solving equations by writing on their whiteboard desks. Principal Gehring reported on the research behind the school’s new furnishings and how they benefit students and staff. The new NPCS was completed in 2016 at a cost of approximately $12 million.

Celebrating 100 years of Christian education
NPCS is celebrating 100 years of Christian education in Neerlandia. The school is capturing these memories in a historical scrapbooking project. An open house and assembly will begin at 1:00 p.m. on March 9, 2017 to commemorate the celebration.

The next board meeting is Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Regional Office in Barrhead starting at 9:30 a.m. Our meetings are open to the public.
