Student Citizenship Awards

The school board’s mission is to deliver an excellent education to our students so they become ethical and responsible citizens. The board, therefore, recognizes students who make positive contributions to their school and community with two types of Citizenship Awards.

Who is eligible?

Students of our community schools and Vista Virtual School can be nominated for Citizenship Awards.

Criteria

Nominations and applications must include statements or examples of how the student meets at least three (3) of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates responsibility
  • Helps/supports others
  • Has a positive attitude
  • Displays kindness to others
  • Works towards goals
  • Listens to others
  • Is honest
  • Has the courage to do what is right
  • Respects others
  • Shows concern for others
  • Is dependable

Kindergarten to Grade 12 Citizenship Awards

By Nomination

  • Certificate and medallion
  • Unlimited awards are available throughout the school year
  • Ongoing

Who can nominate a student?
A student can be nominated by a staff member, community member, or another student.

How to submit a nomination
Complete the online nomination form. The Board will review nominations.

Note: A nomination does not automatically constitute an award being granted; therefore, nominees must not be notified of the nomination.

Number of awards
There is no limit to the number of awards that can be given out in any year.

Award presentation
Students selected to receive a Citizenship Award will receive a congratulatory letter, with details of a formal presentation that will take place later in the year, at a school event (assembly, concert, etc.) where a trustee will present the student with a certificate and medallion.

Nomination Deadline: Nominations will be accepted during the school year until May 1st.

Annual Grade 12 Citizenship Awards

By Application

  • $500
  • Nine (9) awards available per year
  • Awarded annually

How to apply
Grade 12 students can apply for the award by completing the online or print application form (above). Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee at each school.

Number of awards
Nine (9) awards are available each year to graduates of the following schools:

    • Barrhead Composite High School – Two (2)
    • Barrhead Outreach School – One (1)
    • R. F. Staples Secondary School – Two (2)
    • Swan Hills School – One (1)
    • Vista Virtual School – Two* (2) *must be a Primary student to apply
    • Westlock Outreach School – One (1)

Award presentation
Students selected to receive the award will receive $500 and a letter of congratulations which will be presented by a school board trustee at the school’s annual award ceremony.
